Social networks – Services that allow you to connect with other online users E.G Facebook, Twitter etc.

Bookmarking sites – Services that allow you to save and bookmark websites of your choice.

Blogs and forums – Blogs are online journal type things which allow you to constantly post information on anything you choose too. Forums are websites that allow users to discuss topics of their choice.

Historical development of social media

It all started with a platform called BBS. Short for Bulletin Board System, these online meeting places were effectively independently-produced hunks of code that allowed users to communicate with other people where they could download files or games (many times including pirated software) and post messages to other users. It really took off when Facebook came around, which currently is the most used online social media site with over 500 million users. Sites such as twitter, instagram and tumblr all came around later on in the 2000s and are all extremely popular. During the mid 2000s sites such as MySpace and Bebo were the most popular social media websites as they were unique at the time, by the 2010s websites like Facebook and Twitter completely overtook them because Bebo/Myspace couldn’t compete with Facebook and Twitter in terms of revenue and they were not as innovative as twitter/facebook which led both websites to being almost completely forgotten about.

Explain the societal issues raised by social media.

Social media is having a huge impact on society and is becoming stronger over time as people of all ages are using the multiple types of social Medias on all platforms

Here is a few examples of societal issues raised by social media

It provide support and safely information during a crisis- during natural disasters of bombing social media has been used to make sure friends and families were ok

To help in the solving of crimes – social media has been used in law to track down criminals

Explain the potential dangers of social media to individuals including personal safety.

There is a number of dangers when people use social media some of them are, hacking phishing, stalking and bullying

Examples of hacking

New York times hack (2002)

In 2002 19-year-old Adrian Lamo hacked into the internal network of the New York Times and accessed many sensitive records. He accessed records that contained phone numbers, home addresses

Gary McKinnon hacks the US military

Scottish hacker Gary McKinnon, who went by the handle Solo, was accused of hacking to several US military computers in 2001 and 2002. McKinnon allegedly wanted to know what the government knew about UFOs. Military officials said the damage caused by McKinnon included the deletion of critical files from operating systems.

Phishing

The fraudulent practice of sending emails purporting to be from reputable companies in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers, online.

* Our kids must have access to knowledge of how the internet works

* how information is accessed

* what is fact and what is not

* what is content and what is advertising

Protection * from bullying and harassment

* from violence

* from any who make them feel they have no value

Participation

* right to participate in discussions and forums

* right to engage and interact on social media and websites

* right to an opinion without fear of violence or harassment

Responsibilities

Respect Others

* Our kids must know it is their responsibility not to impede the basic rights of others or in any way participate in behaviour that is detrimental to others.

Respect Ourselves

* And equally important is a responsibility to
respect ourselves. Our kids must be aware of their digital footprint and how this effects how they are perceived and who and what they represent.
